7 tips for improving the air quality at home!

Our houses trap moisture and pollutants that affect the quality of air inside. Here are a few tips to improve the air circulation in your home, so you can breathe easy every day.

  1. Help air circulate

A cluttered environment is not good for air circulation and leads to moisture, mould and allergies. To promote good air circulation, limit the amount of furniture and items you keep in each room, leave interior doors open as much as possible, leave gaps between furnishings and a space between furnishings and walls, and keep air inlets and outlets (electric radiators, vents, etc.) free of obstructions.

  2. Use a high-performance range hood

The kitchen is the main source of pollutants in your home. In addition to smoke or steam released while you’re cooking dinner, the kitchen keeps in toxic fumes from cleaning products. This is why we strongly recommend investing in a high-performance range hood. Venmar offers a variety of models that are both stylish and effective. We also suggest limiting pollutants if possible. For example, you can avoid frying and other cooking methods that are known to pollute the air in your kitchen, or use natural cleaning products.

  3. Prioritize healthy habits

There are lots of benefits to keeping up with housework besides how good it makes your house look: by cleaning and dusting regularly, you’ll eliminate pollutants at the source (toxins, bacteria, dust, animal fur, etc.). In addition to everyday upkeep, you should clean your walls, ceiling and shower curtain from time to time. A central vacuum can be very useful: unlike conventional vacuums, which release dust particles back into the room, a central vacuum vents air outside your home, which is great for your air quality.

  4. Reduce excess moisture

Many homes suffer from moisture issues caused by day-to-day activities or the addition of new doors and windows that provide better insulation. A high humidity level (over 50%) promotes the growth of bacteria, mites and mould. Mould can seriously affect air quality, causing both material damage to your home and health problems like asthma and allergies for its occupants. The solution is to ensure proper ventilation by installing an air exchanger, as well as using a bathroom fan and a range hood to vent excess moisture. If humidity levels are still too high even after taking these steps, use a dehumidifier and be sure to empty it regularly.

  5. Avoid VOCs

Some air fresheners (diffusers, sprays, scented candles, etc.), cleaning products and furnishings contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are harmful to your health. So when bad odours arise, it’s best to eliminate them at the source rather than covering them up. For household chores, look for eco-friendly cleaning products with an official certification (like EcoLogo or Ecolabel) or make your own homemade cleaner. This same type of certification is used to assure consumers that their furnishings are free of toxic substances: choose carefully to avoid pieces that emit VOCs. These toxic compounds are also found in certain solvents, glues, varnishes, paints, adhesives, construction materials and floor coverings, which is why it’s important to choose products with an eco-friendly label that will have less of a negative impact on your home environment.

  6. Improve ventilation

Good ventilation is indispensable to maintaining healthy air quality in your home. Combined with proper air circulation throughout rooms, as well as a range hood and bathroom fan, centralized ventilation systems (air exchangers) help eliminate excess moisture and polluting molecules in the air. Note that portable air purifiers can effectively eliminate particles in only a few rooms, but an air exchanger with powerful filtration (or a forced air system with powerful filtration) will make a difference throughout the home. And this isn’t even taking into account how much fresh air it lets in when compared to a portable filtration system.

  7. Keep a regular maintenance routine

Make sure you stay on top of maintaining your ventilation devices: to optimize their effectiveness, clean them regularly and keep the air inlets and outlets clear. If you use systems that include air filters, don’t forget to clean them or replace the filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
